ACC-Big Ten Challenge 2010: Wake Forest, J.T. Terrell Hold Off Iowa

The first half was Iowa's. The second half was Wake Forest's. More accurately, the second half was J.T. Terrell's.

The freshman guard scored 32 points and hit a dramatic -- and deep -- game-winning 3-pointer to lift the Demon Deacons to a 76-73 win in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

He ended the half just as strong as he started it. Terrell led the Demon Deacons on a second-half charge to turn a 12-point deficit at the break into a 10-point lead with nine minutes to play.

The Hawkeyes wouldn't go away.

An 18-8 Iowa run tied the game with 3:19 remaining, and set up a see-saw, mostly defensive finale.

At least, until Terrell took over again.

Holding the ball for the last shot of the game, The Deacons cycled the ball to Terrell, who fired up a long three on line with the hash marks.

The ball found nothing but the bottom of the net. Iowa's inbound play was disrupted and somehow the Deacons, who lost at home to Stetson earlier in the year, turned in the most rousing early performance of the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

Terrell hit 9-of-16 , including 7-of-11 from behind the arc. Only a freshman, and in Jeff Bzdelik's first season at the helm for Wake Forest (4-3), he's the kind of player that could excite the fan base for the near future of a team who had looked pretty poor up to this point.

Iowa (3-4) was led by sophomore guard Eric May, who scored 17 points and added six steals, three rebounds and two assists.

Credit the Deacons' interior defense late in the game as well. Though they struggled on the defensive glass in the final two minutes, Wake blocked four shots on Iowa's final four possessions.
