Joe Johnson, Hawks Star, to Have Elbow Surgery, Miss 4-6 Weeks
Atlanta Hawks guard Joe Johnson will miss four-to-six weeks thanks to upcoming arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow.
Johnson, who woke up Tuesday with discomfort in his elbow, went to see Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion Wednesday, when it was determined that the four-time All-Star guard needed surgery. Andrews will operate within the next few days.
In his 10th NBA season, Johnson has averaged a team-high 17.1 points to go with 5.2 assists and 4.1 rebounds in 18 games, averages which are right around his career marks over 717 career games with the Phoenix Suns, Boston Celtics and Hawks.
However, in his first five seasons in Atlanta, Johnson has averaged over 20.0 points in each campaign. As a result of that performance, Johnson inked a six-year, $124 million in the offseason.
But with his scoring average down to start this season, many wondered if he had become satisfied with his fat contract. The Hawks, though, admitted that Johnson has been playing with the injured elbow.
"This is clearly something that has to be addressed," coach Larry Drew told the AP before Wednesday's game. "As of (Tuesday), he could not extend his arm."
