The Giants have agreed to terms with veteran shortstop Miguel Tejada on a one-year, $6.5-million deal, a team source has confirmed to FanHouse. The signing was first reported by ESPN Deportes. Tejada will replace Juan Uribe, who signed with the Dodgers, as the Giants' primary shortstop, but he could also see time at third base, according to the source.
Tejada, 36, hit .269 with a .312 on-base percentage, to go with 15 homers and 71 RBI last season, spending most of the year with the Orioles and finishing with the Padres. Tejada played third with the Orioles and mostly shortstop with the Padres.
The Giants had tried to re-sign Uribe, but he accepted a three-year deal with the Dodgers on Tuesday. The Giants were reportedly in the mix in trade talks for Jason Bartlett and Marco Scutaro. If the Giants get another shortstop, they could put Tejada at third. Third baseman Pablo Sandoval struggled last season and lost his job during the postseason.
This is the fifth team for Tejada, who began his career across the San Francisco Bay with the A's. He won the 2002 MVP, and then left for Baltimore following the 2003 season. He remained a top offensive shortstop through 2006, but then his numbers began to decline, and he was traded to the Astros.
He spent two years in Houston and re-signed with the Orioles for 2010.
