Cam Newton's Lawyer: 'Cam Newton Hasn't Asked for Any Money'

Cam Newton's lawyer has spoken for the first time about the allegations facing Auburn's Heisman Trophy favorite. And to no surprise, he's denying that Newton requested money from Mississippi State in exchange for a letter of intent.

"No money has been offered to Cam Newton. Cam Newton hasn't asked for any money," George Lawson said. "Cam Newton, Cecil Newton and Jackie Newton have participated in the ongoing NCAA investigation. They have been truthful and candid with the NCAA. They will continue to cooperate with the NCAA and they will produce and answer any and all questions that the NCAA has for them."

Earlier this week, MSU booster Bill Bell admitted that he received a payment plan designed to get Cam Newton to commit to the school.

Bell, a former Mississippi State player, said Kenny Rogers sent him a text message outlining a payment schedule that included $80,000 on the day Newton signed, $50,000 30 days later and $50,000 30 days after that.

"(Cecil Newton) didn't come out and say, 'I want $180,000,' " Bell said in the report. "He inferred it and talked about it, but not directly. Kenny (Rogers, who reportedly sent Bell the payment plan) would talk about it in front of him, and (Cecil Newton) never corrected him or said, 'No, that's not what we're doing.' "

But Lawson insists his client had no knowledge of any talks of money.

"I don't think there's any question that Cam Newton knew nothing about any money discussions, if any money discussions were had," he said. He also claimed to not know about reports that the FBI has gotten involved in the investigation.

"He's a very polished, he's a very smart young man and at this point in his life he's a very mature young man. He's much more mature than most 21-year-olds would be with all the things that he's gone through in his life," Lawson said of Newton.

"I am one million percent confident that Cam Newton took no money from no one."
