No.1 Duke Rolls Past Kansas State, Wins CBE Classic

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Playing in an environment that might as well have been a road game, the No.1 Duke Blue Devils overcame Kansas State and a crowd overwhelmingly in the favor of the fourth-ranked Wildcats to win 82-68 during the CBE Classic championship Tuesday night at the Sprint Center.

Duke broke open what had been a relatively close game early in the second half when guards Nolan Smith and Kyrie Irving went to work and sparked a 10-0 run to open up a 17-point lead. Smith and Irving both scored 17 points to lead the Blue Devils (5-0), who remained unbeaten.

Irving was particularly impressive as he matched up with K-State senior All-American guard Jacob Pullen most of the night and outplayed him. Pullen connected on just 1-of-12 from the field and finished with four points and four turnovers on the night.

Irving, meanwhile, made big shots and took advantage of the weapons around him to finish with six assists. Joining Irving and Smith in double figures from Duke were Mason Plumlee (10), Kyle Singler (11) and Andre Dawkins (11) off the bench.

Curtis Kelly, who was playing in just his second game this season after coming off suspension Monday, led K-State (4-1) and all scorers with 19 points off the bench. Jamar Samuels had 12 points and Martavious Irving added 11. None of the Wildcats starters scored in double figures.

The biggest issues for the Wildcats were free throw shooting (11-of-23) and turnovers (21) on the night.
