LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The New York Yankees officially announced the re-signing of shortstop and captain Derek Jeter to a three-year deal, with a player option for a fourth year in 2014.
The team and Jeter appeared at a press conference Tuesday in Tampa, just down the road from the Winter Meetings at Walt Disney World, and Jeter was surprisingly honest after some public back-and-forth between the team and his agent, Casey Close.
"The thing that probably bothered me the most was how public this became," he told reporters in Tampa. "It was not an enjoyable experience. ... I'd be lying to you if I said I wasn't angry about how some of this went."
Despite that Jeter, and the Yankees, seemed willing to move on.
"I'm not going to point the finger at anyone," said Jeter. "As you can see now, we're one big happy family."
Added GM Brian Cashman: ""I'd like to welcome Derek back to the Yankees. He never left."
Jeter's deal is reportedly worth $51 million over the first three years -- an average annual value of $17 million -- and the option for '14 is worth a base $8 million with a possible $9 million in incentives.
Jeter, who has been with the Yankees for 16 seasons and has 2.926 hits, should become the first player ever to record 3,000 hits in pinstripes early in the 2011 season.
Despite those gaudy numbers, negotiations this winter were contentious at times, likely a result of his poor numbers in 2010. He hit .270 with a .710 OPS, both career lows for his 15 full seasons in the big leagues.
