Mariano Rivera will remain the Yankees' closer for two more seasons -- at least.
The legendary reliever will sign a two-year deal believed to be worth $30 million Friday, the New York Daily News reported Thursday night. That will be the first big-ticket item checked off on the Yankees' winter to-do list, and in much more low-key fashion than the Bombers' negotiations with Derek Jeter.
Rivera's agent, Fern Cuza, told the Daily News earlier Thursday that some work remained to finish off a deal with the Yankees, but when another team jumped in with an offer of three years at perhaps $17 million per, the Yankees quickly wrapped up a deal.
"He wanted to stay loyal to the Yankees," a source told the Daily News.
It certainly is impossible to imagine Rivera in any other uniform than the one he has worn since 1995. Not that there was any doubt he would return to New York, but at least that question can be tabled, likely for good.
Rivera, who turned 41 on Monday, was his usual dominant self most of 2010. He allowed only 39 hits in 60 innings during the regular season, posting a 1.80 ERA while saving 33 games. His 559 career saves are second only to Trevor Hoffman's 601 on the all-time list.
