Russia will host the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The announcement was made by FIFA president Sepp Blatter in Zurich, Switzerland.
Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov accepted the bid on behalf of the Russian delegation.
"You have entrusted us with FIFA World Cup for 2018 and I just can promise, you will never regret," said Shuvalov. "Let us make history together."
The Russian bid beat out efforts from England, Spain/Portugal and Netherlands/Belgium. It will be the first time the World Cup goes to Eastern Europe.
The 2012 European Championship will be co-hosted by Ukraine and Poland.
